A rare blue diamond that has spent the past 300 years in Europe's royal houses has been sold at auction in Geneva for $6.7m (£5m).

The Farnese Blue was given as a wedding present to Elizabeth Farnese, daughter of the Duke of Parma when she wedded Philip V of Spain in 1715.

It at that point went down through the ages, moving from Spain to France, Italy, and Austria.

The 6.1-carat precious stone originates from the renowned Golconda mine of India.

It sold after only four minutes of offering at Sotheby's, effortlessly passing the bartering house's gauge of $3.5m-$5m.

"We were expecting a decent outcome yet we began from $3.5m and we wound up with $6.7m, so we surpassed our desire," said Sotheby's adornments expert, Daniela Mascetti.

"Great gems, all around composed, well-made, with a mark, with a great... space in time, in age, do."
